In downtown Reykjavik, you can find three organic and health shops that are very close to and kind of complement each other:
Heilsuhúsið Skólavörðustígur 4 101 Reykjavik phone: (+354) 552 2966 opening hours: Mon-Fri 10 am - 18 pm Sat 11 am - 3 pm - buckwheat-based packaged breads - crisp breads - rice cakes - several varieties of Semper's cookies (some of which contain "gluten-free wheat flour") and a few other brands - On Tuesdays and Thursdays there's fresh gluten-free bread with rice and millet flour, but note that the bakery that produces it also produces gluten-containing breads. - snack bars (last check: April 2008) Yggdrasill Skólavörðustígur 16 101 Reykjavik phone: (+354) 562 4082 fax: 561 9299 email: yggdrasill@yggdrasill.is website opening hours: Mon-Thu 10 am - 6 pm Fri 10 am - 6:30 pm Sat 10:30 am - 4 pm - buckwheat-based packaged breads - fresh bread on Tuesdays and Thursdays (from gluten breads producing bakery) - cookies and crackers, incl. some Schär products - snack bars (last check: April 2008) Heilsubúðin Njálsgata 1 101 Reykjavik phone: (+354) 561 5250 This one doesn't have many special gluten-free products. However, if you have access to cooking facilities, you may find the Quinoa flakes (cooking time 3 minutes) very handy. (last check: April 2008) budget tip: If you're into rice cakes... or on a tight budget - they're cheapest at the "Bónus" grocery stores. At least some of them also have the chocolate-covered ones (though not so cheap). Click here for the company's overview of their stores in and around Reykjavik.
